Trap music combines elements of the genres hip hop and electronic dance music (edm). It originated during the 1990's as a subgenre of southern coast hip hop in the usa. Trap is now more commonly characterised by a tempo of around 140bpm, its use of 808 kick drums, double-time and triple-time hi-hat rhythms, edm influenced synthesiser sounds and also other orchestral elements. Some trap music is purely instrumental whilst other tracks feature dark and sometimes threatening lyrical content often referring to street life and its hardships from rappers.
